The Valtorta residence is located at Viareggio, precisely at 257 Via Antonio Fratti, a long road situated in the centre of the city, a few metres from its intersection with Via Leonardo da Vinci. The house was purchased by the Valtorta family when they moved definitively from Florence to Viareggio in 1924.
Maria was 27 years old at the time. Her father, Giuseppe Valtorta, officer in the Cavalry Regiment, was a man of 62 years of age, and had already been retired for 11 years due to health reasons. Her mother, Iside Fioravanzi, was a year older than her husband; she was a French teacher in her younger years.
Not rich, but still well-off, they furnished their home with furniture from that time period which they had brought over with them during their frequent transfers, together with objects that were both family mementos and souvenirs from the various cities in which they had lived.
The two-storey house was not very big, but it was quite comfortable according to the needs of that time. It was to Maria’s liking, exactly the way she had wanted it; she thus had a very strong tie to her home which lasted her entire lifetime.
In 1934, when Maria became infirm, the living room on the main floor turned into her bedroom. The following year, a month prior to the death of her father, Marta Diciotti entered the household to assist and care for Maria.
Maria’s mother, Iside, passed away in 1943. In April of 1944, Maria and Marta were forced to leave the house due to evacuation during wartime and moved, with part of the furniture, to St. Andrew of Còmpito. They returned home in December. The house did not undergo any damage and soon turned into the home it once was prior to evacuation.
At the time of Maria Valtorta’s death and as she had expressed in her will, the house was handed over to the Order of the Servants of Mary. Marta Diciotti, though, inherited the right of usufruct of property from Valtorta and would remain at the house on Via Fratti until 1996.
Soon after, but only following the death of Marta in 2001, the Centro Editoriale Valtortiano, who had purchased the property from the Order of the Servants of Mary, began repairs on the house which were completed in 2003.
Today, the room in which Maria Valtorta spent many years in complete infirmity is open to everyone who wishes to visit.
Furthermore, a booklet entitled – Casa Valtorta (The Valtorta Residence) – has been published; it depicts the restoration of the entire property and includes photographs. In this brief volume, the importance attributed to Valtorta’s residence is presented in passages drawn from her writings, the chronological order of events that took place and a few curious remarks that are drawn from the registers signed by visitors.
